How to take inventory of your marketing foundation (so you can focus on what’s the shakiest)

Okay, not quite the same ring to it.

But if you’re gonna have marketing that works this year (and if you’re reading this my guess is that’s what you’re after) then you need to start by taking an inventory of what you’ve got. (and don’t got).

There are 6 marketing foundations that you need to have

  1. Working Website

  2. CRM (Customer Relationship Management)

  3. CDP/Product Data Platform

  4. Brand Kit

  5. Template Email Series (4 kinds)

  6. Customer Feedback Database (can be a spreadsheet)

And you can use this little spreadsheet to see where you’re ranking (it will prompt you to make a copy, you can view it here)

And auto-calculate which foundations you need to focus on.
We’ll be covering one a week for the next 6 weeks!

Yes, you can do your marketing missing one of these, but it’s gonna make your life (a lot!) harder.

Let’s walk through it.

Inventory Checklist

Open up your checklist (it will prompt you to make a copy, you can view it here). And start going through it.

On a scale of 1-5,
(1 being “yeah totally!”, 3 being “maybeeeee?” ,and 5 being “absolutely not.”)…

  • Can i edit my website (namely: homepage, pricing, FAQ’s)? (rate 1-5)

  • Do i know who is most interested in my product within my target audience? (rate 1-5)

  • Do i know how customers are using the product? (rate 1-5)

  • Do i know what colors to use for different situations? (rate 1-5)

  • Do i followup with customers on a regular basis? (rate 1-5)

  • Do I know what my customers are saying about me? (rate 1-5)

Once you answer that question in the purple foundation part of the table, it will auto-update in priority order in the orange spreadsheet right next to it.

This is what you need to focus on in your marketing for the next 6 weeks.

Task list for the quarter…✅ (you should go get yourself a little treat)

Each week i’m going to walk through one of these foundations - and you can get it done in a week too.

And you can sleep easy on marketing knowing you have a roadmap forward.

(And big note: if you’re in a big organization, start by asking whoever is in charge of that thing you need if you could please get access to it - you might not need to build as much as you think. )
